Kregar used the project as an opportunity to experiment with materials, construction and collaboration. The resulting installation is an enormous bird nest-like timber structure that viewers can walk through and sit within. Constructed entirely out of old discarded timber, the structure parasitically engulfs Te Tuhi's foyer entrance in a complex web of wooden refuse.

In a nearby gallery space, Kregar also displays the dream architecture of local youth. In the weeks leading up to the exhibition, Kregar worked with over three hundred students from Elm Park Primary School to create drawings and cardboard models of their own dream houses. Together the installation and exhibition explore the importance of imagination, experimentation and spontaneity in creating dynamic architectural forms.

For more information about the exhibition, please visit Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts' exhibition page.
Also, New Zealand's The Times spoke to Gregor. Small Room with Animals runs until 6 May.

Small Room with Animals and Humans at MARS brings together local and international visual and performing artists, architects, philosophers, writers and scientists interested in exploring questions of biodiversity, sustainability and the aesthetic and ethical engagement with animals and with each other.
The animal realm is so often opposed to the human realm. This exhibition asks the audience to rethink this opposition. It explores a range of questions. How can we bring about a new regard for all living beings and the various and diverse manifestations of life that inhabit the earth? What are the distinctions between animals and humans and what happens when those distinctions are blurred? What are the possibilities for giving new representations to animals who have been the subject of art since pre-historic times? Given the environmental challenges, how can we sustain biological diversity when the earth itself now seems to have only “small room” for living. And finally, in the wider community, who is inclusively creating hospitality in their own 'small rooms' for animals and humans, and what do these spaces look like? Throughout the duration of this exhibition and its related performances, talks and events, we will explore these questions from a variety of perspectives.

Participating artists include: Sam Burke and Domenico de Clario, Xiao Yu Bai, Erin Tappe, Grant Cowan, John Scurry, Martin King, Geoffrey Ricardo, Jessica Emily-Price, Lotte and Toots, Kerrie Poliness, David Shea and Lateral Movement, Alexis Beckett, Mark Minchinton, Georgia Anson, Veronica Kent, Gregory Burgess, Meg Williams, Lisa Roet, Janno, Lin Onus and The Donkey’s Tail.

Small Room with Animals and Humans is part of The Centre for Ideas, VCA, symposia series “In Flesh and Blood: Animals in Art and Philosophy” led by philosophers including Peter Singer (3 April), Raimond Gaita (24 April) and Andrew Benjamin (11 May), exploring the philosophical limits between animals and humans.

For more information, please visit MARS Gallery.

DAVID CHESWORTH at West Space

http://www.fehilycontemporary.com.au/3/post/2012/04/david-chesworth-at-west-space.html

http://www.fehilycontemporary.com.au/3/post/2012/04/david-chesworth-at-west-space.html#comments

Uncategorized

West Space will be exhibiting David Chesworth and Katie Lee's collabor [...]

West Space will be exhibiting David Chesworth and Katie Lee's collaborative sound and sculpture installation All Who Occupy This Great Space from 20 April to 12 May. The exhibition runs until 28 April.

"Acknowledging the substantial history of text in art, Paper-jams looks sideways from that legacy to foreground those artists who address the page as a physical and political context rather than focusing on the content of the words contained within. For them, paper is a surface to excavate, to break through the conventional ways we absorb and present information. Similarly, books become objects with their own history of exchange, value and meaning. These works challenge the materiality of the page and the creative potential of its limitations. In an age of online information and electronic tablets, the threatened extinction of the conventional book brings renewed poignancy to the physical structures and systems that have supported publishing since the invention of the codex and the printing press. Artists include Gretchen Albrecht, Bruce Andrews, Billy Apple and Wystan Curnow, Dan Arps, Elliot Collins, Fiona Connor, Lyell Cresswell, Paul Cullen, Philip Dadson, Johanna Drucker, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Marco Fusinato, Tony Green, Robert Grenier, Fiona Jack, Tessa Laird, Alan Loney, Peter Madden, Allan McDonald, Teri Moon, Patrick Pound, Ed Ruscha, Katrina Van Roon and Ivan Zagni. Curated by Andrew Clifford."
