Angela
Ellsworth’s practice has grown to encompass a variety of mediums, spanning
drawing, painting, installation and performance. Her work explores conceptions
and constrictions of the human body. In connecting the body with art, her solo
and collaborative artworks and performances have taken in such wide-ranging
subjects as physical fitness, endurance, social ritual, religious tradition and
performance art history. Her stitched portraits on serviettes reveal tender
moments and fragile, revered memories. More recently, Angela Ellsworth has
drawn from her Mormon background to create her series of sculptural bonnets.
The use of corsage pins in these works emphasizes a sharp-ended side to beauty
and the constraints of a Mormon upbringing. These traditional pioneer bonnets
are made of fabric with a pearl-encrusted exterior comprising thousands of
pins.
Angela Ellsworth is based in Phoenix, Arizona and her work is regularly exhibited nationally and internationally. In 2010, her sculptures, together with a program of performances, were shown in the 17th Sydney Biennale, at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, Australia. In the same year Ellsworth participated in IN>TIME, DCA Theatre, Chicago Cultural Center, Chicago, Illinois, USA, as well as having a solo exhibition, Training, Central Utah Art Center, Ephraim, Utah, USA.
