Hailing from Flinders Island, Tasmania, Ricky Maynard’s career as an artist spans over twenty years and includes numerous photographic series that document the culture, life, and struggles of Australia’s indigenous communities in our contemporary age. His acclaimed series Portrait of a Distant Land explores Tasmania’s indigenous cultural heritage, past and present and has been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney (2009) and the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, Perth (2010); and internationally at the Australian Embassy, Paris (2007) as well as museums and galleries throughout Australia including in Hobart, Canberra, Cairns, and Port Macquarie. The series traces significant sites around Maynard’s homeland, drawing on community knowledge, oral history, and extensive consultation and research.
Recently his work has been included in several national and international group exhibitions including Culture Warriors (Katzen Arts Centre, Washington DC 2009); Open Air: Portraits in the Landscape (National Portrait Gallery, Canberra 2008-9); and Half Light: Portraits from Black Australia (Art Gallery of NSW, 2008). His work is held in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of NSW, the National Museum of Australia, the Queensland Art Gallery, and many other state and national collections.
