Sonia Payes is an acclaimed photographer based in Melbourne, Australia. Over her many years of practice, her photography has incorporated a broad spectrum of techniques and subjects, revealing the artist as equally at ease with choice and chance. The principal focus of her work is portraiture, crafting images that both capture and define her subjects. More recently, her work has veered towards the surreal with a series of haunting portraits and landscapes, alluring the viewer with things obscured and left unseen.

Sonia Payes’ recent group exhibitons include Outside In (McClelland Gallery + Sculpture Park, Melbourne 2010); and Captured, Collected, Categorized (Australian Center of Photography, Sydney 2010). Selected solo exhibitions include Insomnia I + II (Cube 37 New Media Gallery, Frankston 2009); and Portraits of Australian Artists (John Curtin Access Gallery, Perth 2008). Her major publication project Untitled (Macmillan Art Publishing, 2008) is a collection of photographs and essays on prominent Australian artists and their studios lauded as “…one of the most lavishly produced books on Australian art in recent years” (Sasha Grishin, Canberra Times).
